The story of the Electric Factory started back in 1968 at 22nd and Arch. The original club was part the famous group of venues, like Bill Graham’s Fillmore East and West, Boston’s Tea Party, Detroit’s Grande Ballroom and Chicago’s Kinetic Playground, that played a major part in developing the careers of Jimi Hendrix, Frank Zappa, The Who, Led Zeppelin, and the Velvet Underground. It was founded by Sheldon Kaplan and Herbert Spivak, along with Spivak’s brothers Jerry and Allen. After Kaplan sold his stake in the company, Larry Magid, who had been hired to book all of the shows, stepped in as a partner.
